The story of the Semois Valley
The Semois Valley has a rich and varied history. Since Roman times, the river has played a vital role, with its sources in Arlon supplying the city's baths.
In the Middle Ages, the valley was a strategic axis, with fortresses such as Bouillon Castle, associated with Godfrey of Bouillon, a legendary figure of the Crusades.
In the 20th century, the region was famous for tobacco cultivation, particularly the Burley variety, which was introduced to the Semois Valley. The tobacco drying barns, still visible today, bear witness to this flourishing activity.
The valley is also rich in legends, such as that of the cursed hunter, adding a mystical dimension to its cultural heritage.
Today, the Semois Valley is renowned for its natural beauty and historical heritage, attracting many visitors in search of authenticity and unspoilt landscapes.
This protected area, recently classified as a National Park, covers 28,904 hectares and offers exceptional biodiversity, home to hillside forests, wetlands and rare species such as lynx and otters.
